What is it like doing the Renjo La pass trek 14 days?

You will start the Renjo La pass trek 14 days, with a thrilling Lukla flight. A short 30-minute flight will bring you to the gateway of the Everest region. From here, start trekking to Phakding village for your first-night stay in the mountain. You will cross many suspension bridges on the way. The trail then ascends to Namche Bazaar.

The last few hundred meters of the route is steep. You will take an acclimatization break in Namche Bazaar before continuing the trek to Dole. This is where you will leave the mainstream EBC trail and follow an offbeat route to Gokyo Valley. From Dole, trek past Machhermo village and go through the Ngozumpa Glacier moraine.

Ngozumpa is the biggest glacier in Nepal. Further, you will come across the first two Gokyo Lakes and ascend to the Gokyo village, situated near the third Gokyo Lake. Spend the next day in Gokyo village as well and explore Gokyo Ri and the upper reaches of the valley where the fourth and fifth Gokyo Lakes are situated.

After your time in Gokoy village, you will ascend to Renjo La pass. This pass connects Gokyo Valley and Nagpala. The Nagpa La pass is a trading route that Tibetan merchants use to this date with their yak caravan. Crossing the Renjo La pass is considerably easier than Cho La and Kongma La because there is no glacier walking.

However, it has its own set of challenges. Once you climb the top of the Renjo La pass, you will get to witness a heavenly view of Mt. Everest and the Gokyo Lakes. This is the most challenging part of the Gokyo Renjo La pass trek. From here onwards, it is time to descend to Lukla.

You will spend a night in Lungden village and follow a tranquil route to Namche Bazaar via villages like Thame, Marlung, and Taranga. Visit an ancient monastery in Thame village. You will leave the Namche Bazaar on your 11th day of trekking and descend steeply via dense forests to Phakding.

The trail then ascends along the Dudh Koshi River to Lukla, recrossing it several times. To travel back to Kathmandu, you will take another short flight from Lukla. It will be quite a dramatic flight experience. You can check our Renjo La pass trek map below for a pictorial route representation.

How to train for the Renjo La pass trek?

The Renjola pass trek difficulty is high, so the trekkers have to be in good shape physically and mentally to complete it. Previous trekking and hiking experience will help you a lot to get used to the elevation rise and adapt to the terrain.

Similarly, before the trek begins, you should strengthen your legs and core. Improve your stamina and endurance as well by doing cardio activities like swimming, day hiking, cycling, running, strength training, etc. Get physically active.

Who can do the Renjo La pass trek? Are you ready for the journey?

The Renjola pass trek is for experienced trekkers or individuals who have good fitness. It is a challenging trek given long hours of walking, offbeat terrain, and Renjo La pass crossing. So, we only recommend this trek to those who can bear the challenges and push themselves.

Whether you are ready for the Renjo La pass trek or not entirely depends on your fitness. If you are fit, then no need to think twice about joining the trek. If you are not fit, then train yourself for 2 to 3 months before the trek starts. Improve your strength, stamina, and endurance.

The Renjola pass trek difficulty

The Renjo La pass trek is fairly difficult. It is not the toughest trek in the Everest region but has a fair share of hurdles. The trekking route to the Gokyo Valley and Renjo La pass is offbeat and steep. You will cross landslide debris and a glacier moraine.

Likewise, the high altitude affects your walking pace and may frequently exhaust you. So, we highly suggest anyone who wants to do a high pass trek in Nepal have decent fitness and some sort of previous trekking expertise.

Prevent altitude sickness

With high altitude come risks of altitude sickness. Its symptoms are persistent headache, vomiting, nausea, difficulty in breathing, insomnia, loss of appetite, etc. These symptoms indicate that you may be suffering from altitude sickness.

Trekkers with previous high altitude experience have a low risk of getting altitude sickness during the Renjo La pass trek. Does who are new must follow the below preventive measures:

  • Try ascending less than 500 meters below. Even if you are gaining more altitude than this, sleep at a low altitude.
  • Do not drink alcohol, high quantities of caffeine, or smoke while trekking. These things will dehydrate your body and make you prone to altitude sickness.
  • Listen to your body and maintain your pace. Push yourself only when needed. Otherwise, enjoy the journey at a slow pace.
  • If you feel any discomfort, inform your guide and get first aid. Do not hide any problem from your guide or have any medicine without his knowledge.
  • Drink plenty of water and other fluids like ORS, soups, etc, during trekking.

Different Renjola pass trekking seasons

The best times to do the Renjo La pass trekking in Nepal are these months- March, April, May, September, October, and November. Similarly, this trek can also be done in December if the participants can tolerate the cold. June, July, August, January, and February are off time for this trek because of unfavorable weather and climate conditions.

Trekking in the best months allows you to experience Lukla flights on time. Likewise, you will get to witness stunning mountain panoramas because the sky mostly remains clear. The stable weather, long daylight hours, and moderate climate make trekking fantastic. Nature is also thriving in these months.

Ensure your safety with travel insurance: helicopter evacuation coverage is mandatory

Travel insurance covering helicopter evacuation is important if you want to join the Renjo La pass trek with us. Foreigners cannot purchase well-covered travel insurance in Nepal, so please get it in your country. Make sure to check if the helicopter rescue is available in the Himalayas in your insurance and bring the documents with you.

Before the trek starts, trekkers have to submit their travel insurance to us. In case of emergency, we contact your travel insurance and arrange a quick evacuation. You can also include medical bills and other coverages like trip cancellation, flight cancellation, etc, in your travel insurance.

The Renjo La pass trek package has twin-shared rooms. Single rooms are booked on request. You will use shared washrooms. Toilets can be Western-style or squat. Trekkers are requested to carry all toiletries for the trek, including toilet paper. The sleeping rooms are small but clean and cozy.

You will get a blanket, but for extra comfort, we recommend carrying a sleeping bag. Services like hot showers, charging, and WiFi cost extra money. Similarly, for food, many options are available throughout the trek. Dal bhat, thukpa, momo, noodles, chapati, fried rice, porridge, soups, stew, and pancakes will be some of the common foods.
